Create an itinerary including United States Capitol
Set at the convergence of Washington, D.C.'s four quadrants, United States Capitol serves as both a symbol of the U.S. government and the home to the U.S. Congress. The Neoclassical-style structure was constructed in several stages between 1793 and 1863; however, renovations and structural tweaks to support the weight of the massive, 88 m (289 ft) dome continued well into the 20th century. Walk in and look around--and up--the rotunda contains artwork, statues of presidents and important American figures, and an extensive fresco on the ceiling. You can learn more about the history of the U.S. Congress, Washington, D.C., and the building itself at the visitor center, which is spread over three floors set entirely underground. You'll need to book a tour well in advance (and a tour is the only way visitors can access much of the interior), as tour space is extremely limited. • Tour covers limited areas given this is a working building but it's still worth seeing the dome from below and the statutory as well as hearing about the history.

  • Do not miss visiting the US capitol. The building is amazing and the history it tells is a must do when visiting Washington DC. You can do a free tour where a guide is telling you a lot of facts about the building, the people who worked here and the ones who still work here. You can experience the history of the government of the United States here better then any where else. Secret tip: visit the capitol when the sun is down for a walk around the capitol garden.
  • It's an amazing building with its history. Really enjoy listening to the tour guide when she explained the history of the building and the statues of each states. One of destinations should visit when in DC. Before visit, should register your date of visit at US Capitol's website.
