Built in 1808, the front portion of the jail originally contained four cells, each of which was approved to house 40 prisoners. In 1823, after only 15 years of use, the 1808 jail was deemed insufficient and a new stone jail was built just to the rear of the older structure. The 1808 jail was then converted into a house for the jailor with a kitchen made of the leftover stones from the "New Jail" added in 1824. The rear structure contains original cells as well as an exercise yard, which was also used as a hanging yard. Hangings took place in the yard until 1896. This is one of the most perfectly preserved old jails in the Commonwealth, and was operated as a jail until 1966.Plan your visit to The Fauquier History Museum at the Old Jail and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Warrenton tour itinerary planner.

enjoyed our self guided tour of this place. It is well marked for those with patience to read signs. Easy to do in about 30 minutes if you have impatient people in your group.

This was our second time coming here. The gentleman at the front desk gave us a history lesson on the jail and stories involving the people who inhabited the jail and then sent us off to explore. There was so much to see from information about the women's suffrage movement, native American artifacts, murder weapons from the 1800s, artifacts from the jail, the courtyard and jail cells..and so much more. It was informative, fun, ominous at times, and just a neat part of history and Warrenton.
This building was incredible, with so much history and some creepy spaces that gave a real feel of what jail life was like back then. The front reception gave a great brief overview of the history (everyone was exceptionally friendly, helpful and informative), then I roamed around on my own. The courtyards and extra security areas were my favorite parts. I loved this place and plan to go back again, and would highly recommend a tour (it's only a $5.00 fee) to anyone heading to Warrenton. One suggestion is that they put some information in the Visitor Center about the jail. I stopped in there and got a city map but didn't see anything on the jail unless I missed it.
