In 1983, the Olympia Tumwater Foundation acquired Tumwater’s elegant Schmidt House, built in 1904, for Olympia Brewing Company founder Leopold Schmidt and his wife Johanna. The home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Tumwater Register of Historic Places and is within the Tumwater Historic District. The picturesque grounds are graced with native gardens, reflective pool and graceful statues brought back from Europe by Leopold Schmidt. Our Tumwater holiday maker makes visiting The Schmidt House and other Tumwater attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.
The historic house and grounds are made available for the Public History Programs organized by the Foundation’s Public History Manager, and for a limited number of rental opportunities for weddings, receptions and other special events.
A historical marker, “A House Called Three Meter“, stands just outside the front gate of the Schmidt House grounds providing a detailed history on the home and family who had lived there.
The grounds also feature the Centennial Rose Garden cared for by the Olympia Rose Society, the Pacific Northwest District of the American Rose Society. For information on the history of this garden and of the variety of rose species grown, go to www.pnwdistrict.org

Quite a beautiful house with well maintained lawn. Doesn't seem to be open to visitors often. There is ample parking. Wasn't open when I visited but I did walk around the grounds and took some...

Beautiful historic home. Nice to see but not open very often. Check for hours to visit before going. Great for pictures though.

I was honored to officiate a wedding on the property, what a beautiful setting and stunning rose garden as well. We didn't go inside this time, but years ago my brother had his wedding inside and the property is fabulously maintained. Nice place for a wedding or a holiday event, plenty of space for everyone.

My daughter's wedding was held here so it will always be special to our family. There's a beautiful rose garden in back and the grounds are well maintained and lovely. The only reason I haven't given 5 stars is because of the lack of access for disabled people due to the many stairs. Besides that it is a beautiful and well cared for historic site. I must add that our event here was several years ago and they may have updated to allow for disabled access.
