In 1968, a group of volunteers gathered artifacts and established a small museum in the city of South Lake Tahoe. Featuring Washoe artifacts, the Pony Express, early industry, a farm exhibit, the role of steamships, the Lincoln Highway.

We have an extensive array of photographs from Tahoe's history available for purchase, along with a great bookstore, postcards, cards and gifts.

Our movie theater continuously shows movies from Tahoe's past.

The Log Cabin is open during the summer, and the adjacent Osgood Toll house is the oldest commercial building on the South Shore.

Take our walking history tour, let the kids take a history scavenger hunt....you could spend a day enjoying Lake Tahoe History!

  • Would have loved to visit if only you were open. Ditto everything else historical or educational—all closed Monday through Wednesday

  • Highly recommend visiting here! There is a video that is around 50 minutes that is so informative. Should take the time to watch first then walk around the museum. We spent close to 3 hours here and had a wonderful time. Also, Google said they were closed but they were open. Go to their website for the hours.
  • We were at Lake Tahoe Monday and Tuesday only to find The Pope Estate, the Taylor Creek Visitor Center and the Lake Tahoe Historical Society Museum all closed in the middle of summer. What a bummer! Why don’t they alternate closing days? Sure won’t recommend this place to anyone.
