The Third Street Promenade is a pedestrian mall esplanade, shopping, dining and entertainment complex in the downtown area of Santa Monica, California which originally opened as the Santa Monica Mall on November 8, 1965. It is considered a premier shopping and dining district on the Westside and draws crowds from all over the Greater Los Angeles area. Due to easy access to Downtown Los Angeles via the Big Blue Bus rapid transit service, E Line's terminus station and the Pacific Coast Highway-Santa Monica Freeway Interstate, the neighborhood's north-south thoroughfares connecting to Muscle Beach, Venice Canal Historic District, Marina del Rey, Ballona Wetlands and Los Angeles International Airport, and its proximity to historic U.S. Route 66, Santa Monica Pier, Palisades Park, Tongva Park, Santa Monica State Beach and the Pacific Ocean coupled with Los Angeles's mild mediterranean climate, it is also a popular tourist destination.
For travelers who use our international travel planner, Santa Monica holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Third Street Promenade and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • Roaming through the promenade checking out all the stores. Big time tourist spot and we fell for it. If you have the Time then waste a few hours here looking around.

  • Lots of shops and restaurants but not a place if you are looking for a peaceful walk or shopping experience, especially on weekends, loud music and crowds.

  • Well kept city. If you're a smoker you should know smoking is banned from downtown - clean air act. A bit commercialized for my taste. Great night life. Beach is steps away. Homeless issue is evident here as is everywhere else. Public seating is reserved for parks and customers mainly.
  • Santa Monica is so beautiful! It is very fun to walk around any day of the week. There are many restaurants and places to go and look at. The pier is also very fun to be at. And it also has lots of history of the pier to read and learn from. Turns out Popeye the Sailor did exist! The crazy and homeless are not taken into consideration here because it's such a normalized thing in L.A. that I decided not to mention it here for the sake of Santa Monica. Feel free to walk as much as you want and explore Santa Monica, because it has a very welcoming vibe everywhere. Still, like everywhere in L.A. it's pricey so don't be shocked, and ask how much it cost before ordering or buying!
