Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco

4.8
Must see · Bridge · Historic Site
One of the most photographed structures in the world, Golden Gate Bridge is the first feature of San Francisco you'll see when driving in from the north. Opened in 1937, the structure boasted the longest suspension bridge main span until 1964. Still considered one of the world's greatest engineering feats, the bridge draws visitors with its numerous vantage points, from which you can see and photograph the picturesque bay and boats passing under the iconic structure's red towers. The bridge has sectioned-off pathways on each side for both pedestrians and cyclists, so you can take your time crossing and admiring the views. Though the bridge closes for pedestrians at night. • Good place to visit and hangout with family and friends. 1) The “Golden Gate” refers to the strait through which boats go to enter the Bay. It was originally named by U.S. army officer John Fremont in 1846. 2) The hills surroundings the bridge are themselves golden in color much of the year and when the sun is at the right angle it has an extremely beautiful golden glow. 3) The bridge is simply the bridge that spans the Golden Gate Strait. 4) The Golden Gate bridge is regularly painted. 5) Every state in the United States has a bridge maintenance and inspection plan. 6) When built, it was the bridge with the longest span bridge in the world till 1964. Now it is the ninth-longest suspension bridge in the world. 7) It is famous for its extraordinary design. 8) One can swim, across the strait but completely at one's own risk. One can come in at Fort Baker on the North side or at Ft Point on the South. Both are rocky entries and you should visit and enter them during daylight.
  • If you make it to San Francisco, you simply must visit the bridge and walk through it. It's one of the most breathtaking views I have ever experienced in my life. I walked from Pier 39 and was seeing a lot of tourist attractions along the way. The walk along the beach was amazing. It was a little chilly but sunny... So I was completely surprised when I saw people swimming. But it works for some. I walked more than 6 miles to get to that bridge. After I got to it.. I had to take a moment and just soak it all in. Loved every moment of it. I'd definitely recommend you take the walk and experience everything great about this. You won't regret it. You will love the view from the top.
