Create an itinerary including Maritime Museum of San Diego
See and visit historical sailing ships, steamboats and submarines at Maritime Museum of San Diego, and even sail on some of them. Established in 1948, this open-air museum hosts one of the largest collections of historical sea vessels in the United States. Take a self-guided tour through the ships and mind your head--it can be quite cramped inside. See the oldest ship in the world still able to sail--the 1863 Star of India, which used to sail the seas for up to a year at a time--and a 1,814 metric ton (2,000 ton) diesel-electric Soviet submarine, among others. Visit the archives and exhibits to learn more about that mystical connection that people and sea have always shared. • Visiting from an historic waterfront community, we weren't sure we would get much out of the Maritime Museum, but boy were we wrong. We spent about two hours and wished for two more. Each vessel...

  • swift boat tour was AWESOME! thanks to the vets who gave us their time. It was an amazing experience and super affordable. The Star of India portion was one of my favorite things of San Diego It was so interesting and the whole place was laid out so well. If you have little kids make sure to go to the very bottom floor. everything about this place is great and can't wait to come back. there was so much to see.. could easily spend many hours. My kids loved running around and checking everything out. A lot of variety.
  • You must go and pay extra for the Swift boat tour. It's great for families and the elderly. The tours would be harder for a elderly person to get on and off the boats but not the Swift boat tour. Park at the USS Midway. It's a small walk but not bad considering the price for parking is better with a 12 hour time limit. My 2 teenage boys love it.
