Create an itinerary including Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park
The site of the first European settlement in the region and resting place for many travelers who were headed west, Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park recalls the pioneering spirit of the California Gold Rush's early years. Founded in 1839 by John Sutter, the fortified structure has since been restored and today is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Wander the grounds and view the adobe-style architecture of the central building (the only original surviving structure), which is surrounded by thick walls, defensive towers, and other buildings. Stop by the museum to view items owned by early pioneers who sought aid from the fort, including some from the infamous Donner Party. You can also join a guided tour to learn more about the history of the short-lived settlement, the region, and its residents. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Sacramento holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • Cool place to visit. It was only $5 per person. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable. Only the middle building is original but they reconstructed the rest of the fort and it looks old enough to be original. It's cool to see how people used to live. And it's really cool how it's just in the middle of a neighborhood and across from the hospital. There was plenty of parking available on the street and the meters were free because it was Sunday.
  • Came here today with friends and my son and met up with my mom and aunt. It was a great time, very informative, haven't been here since I was in 4th grade. I had a lot of fun, every single one of the employees were super nice, admission is cheap, and parking is abundant. All of us had a fun time. My son was very happy get get some rock digs from the gift shop.
