This wildlife refuge is actually a city park encompassing about 57 hectares (141 acres) along the eastern bank of the Willamette River. In a floodplain, this area attracts a wide range of birds. It is designated as the city's very first park for migratory birds. Put Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Portland trip planner.

I love to bicycle to this part of SE Portland. As a born and raised Portlander, Oaks Bottom is the place to be to see wildlife and meditate. Clean and safe (during the day). From migrating birds to local life, it's full of the sounds of nature. But also the sounds of the amusement park across the train tracks to the west, especially during the summer. Kids are loud and their screams of joy and fear are never a muffled sound, so be warned. Otherwise, it's great.

Only hiked part looking fo birds. The main roads are paved and busy with joggers and cycles. Easy walk down but there is a grade walking back up that might be a problem for certain health issues. Main path large enough to accommodate a wheelchair with room for other traffic to pass. Milwaukee parking lot was the start point We will explore side paths next. 2nd path is only for the sure footed as we were on gravel path then stairs on to a meadow. You can see Oaks Parks in the background. No joggers on this part. Not a circle path. Pictures are from the 2nd hike.
