Known as the Gibraltar of the Pacific, Morro Rock is one of California's most recognizable geological phenomenon. More than 23 million years old, the rock is a remnant of long-gone volcanic activity. Spanish explorers of the Pacific coast came across the rock, and mariners used it as a navigation point for centuries. Peregrine falcons and other bird species breed here, and sea otters frequent the spot. Climbing the rock is forbidden to anyone except the members of local Salinan and Chumash tribes, who consider the rock as a sacred site. A causeway connects the rock with the nearby beach. • I have visited here on every trip to the West coast. It’s a beautiful area and the rock is the focal point. Great views, lovely walks and a quaint seaside town. If you are in the area stop here.

  • Lovely place. Great to walk along the harbour. You may get to see some otters which often sleep in the harbour area. Plenty to see and so hear. Good bars, good food and easy to navigate

  • In love with this place. The beach is beautiful, and you can see sea otters!
  • Beautiful place to walk around and watch the otters float by, surfers, fat squirrels, and waves. Fun shops and restaurants are all around. Be sure to visit both the old and new part of Embarcadero.
