Known by locals as Potash Road, the official name of this scenic drive is Potash-Lower Colorado River Scenic Byway. The road was ranked one of the most beautiful highways in 1963, and the scenery hasn't changed much--you'll navigate among towering red cliffs and layered sandstone rocks with views of the Colorado River. Although it was built to service potash mines, the 24.1 km (15 mile) stretch of paved road quickly became popular with tourists after it was completed. Passageways to both Canyonlands National Park and Dead Horse Point State Park break off from the paved section of the road. Watch for various highlights along the byway: three natural arches, petroglyphs, and dinosaur footprints. Some of these sights are hard to miss, while the others are marked by signs. • We were able to see some Pueblo Rock art just by the side of the road. The trail was easy and clearly marked for hikers.

  • Besides rock formations, you can see a bunch of petroglyphs. They are kind of like morel mushrooms. After you find one, you will find a bunch more.
