Castle Rock State Park is a 5242acre state park of California, USA, located along the crest of the Santa Cruz Mountains and almost entirely in Santa Cruz County, with parts extending into Santa Clara County and San Mateo County. It embraces coast redwood, Douglas fir, and madrone forest, most of which has been left in its wild, natural state. Steep canyons are sprinkled with unusual rock formations that are a popular rock climbing area. The forest here is lush and mossy, crisscrossed by 32mi of hiking trails. These trails are part of an even more extensive trail system that links the Santa Clara and San Lorenzo valleys with Castle Rock State Park, Big Basin Redwoods State Park, and the Pacific Coast. Due to its overnight parking lot, Castle Rock is a popular starting point for the Skyline-to-the-Sea Trail, a 30mi trail that begins near by at Saratoga Gap and leads to Waddell Beach north of Santa Cruz. There are two walk-in campgrounds within the park for overnight backpacking. To visit Castle Rock State Park and get the most from your holiday in Los Gatos, create itinerary details personal to you using our Los Gatos route planner.

We went to Castle Rock State Park. This is a very popular park for hiking and also for climbing. We were there on a sunny day in the fall.

A beautiful park with many hiking trails of all levels and multiple rocks for rock climbing activities. There is a small waterfall but it is almost dry this time of the year. In addition, there are many observations points with amazing views of the mountains where you can see as far as Monterey bay. The trails are not suitable for bikes or stroller kids though.
A beautiful park with areas to rock climb. It's so magical to go on this trail and see miles and miles of trees. It's an open nature preserve and it's just stunning. Not too challenging. I'm a not an avid hiker and my legs are a little sore the next day but nothing too bad.
