Create an itinerary including Audubon House & Tropical Gardens
Step back in time at Audubon House & Tropical Gardens, the former home of maritime pilot and master wrecker Capt. John H. Geiger. The grand property, built by the captain in the 1840s, has been restored to its former glory. A guided tour of the house, which is filled with antiques, provides a glimpse into the comfortable lives that wealthy Key West families enjoyed during the mid 19th century. Once the tour is over, you are free to explore the house and 0.4 hectare (1 acre) tropical gardens independently. The gardens are said to have been visited by the naturalist J.J. Audubon in 1832, who then used images from the gardens in his drawings. Be sure to read the information panels throughout the property to discover more about the Geiger family and Key West society in the 1800s. • Lovely grounds with beautiful tropical gardens, birds, and turtles - we even got to feed them cucumber slices. Self-guided or with a tour, be sure to visit this art gallery and gardens.

  • This house is a captivating snippet of early Key West settlement. The estate is a fine example of the possessions and dwellings of a wealthy salvor, Captain Geiger. The furniture, doors, construction methods, and the cookhouse are noteworthy. I was particularly interested in what appear to be an early example of roller skates. Mr. Audubon's artwork may be purchased at the store. Student discount admission is available.
  • If you're looking for a picturesque place to get married in Key West, you should check out Audubon House. It's got a great vibe that feels like you're in a tropical paradise, even though you're right in the middle of downtown. And the best part is, it's super private so you won't feel like you're right in the middle of all the hustle and bustle. It's a great spot for a wedding!
