Create an itinerary including The Rising Sun Tavern
While not serving food or drink since 1827, the Rising Sun Tavern Museum provides a lively interpretation of Tavern life.

George Washington’s youngest brother, Charles, built this landmark in 1760 as his private residence. The building became a tavern in 1792.

Today, the “tavern wenches” and male “indentured servants” entertain visitors as though they have just stepped off their coaches into colonial times.

  • From Colonial times to surviving the War Between the State, the building is well worth the visit. The docents are in period dress and did a great job of telling the story of the tavern.

  • The wife and I attended a whiskey and taxes event here! We had the opportunity to learn how whiskey shaped America. The history lesson was extremely informative and the staff had us try how whiskey was made back in the 1800's.
  • Attended a whiskey tasting event...museum staff in colonial era clothing...discussed the history of whiskey in the colonies then the country. Placed the significance of whiskey in historical context. Good event. Original home built in 1760 by Charles Washington, youngest brother of George, after whom Charlestown, WV was named.
