  • One of those unforgettable places. Was on my road trip and couldn’t not stop of course. Worth spending at least half an hour. Variable cool and strange things and objects for different age. Good spot in Utah, would come again.
  • Reviews of "Hole N" the Rock" with white letters painted on sandstone are not this, but a different Point of Interest near Moab, 290 miles and 6 1/2 hours away. The Hole in the Rock is a beautiful but very remote hike and pioneer site near Lake Powell and Escalante, Utah. Five miles from Escalante, the dirt road turns southeast off of UT-12. The road is 55 miles of washboard dirt road, requiring a high-clearance truck or SUV, preferably with 4-wheel-drive, to make it all the way to the end. Google Maps said it's 2:37 from Escalante; it took us about 4 hours. Speeds range from 30-35 mph (1st 10 miles), to 15-25 mph (middle 35 miles); most of the first 40 miles are rough but mostly passable. Speeds slow to 10 mph or less for the last 10 miles, over severe rocky Jeep trail and quite poor road conditions. The reward is a beautiful view down a narrow canyon that disappears down towards Lake Powell. The hike is a scramble down and back up over various-sized boulders to the reservoir below, and mostly shaded from the midday sun. Beautiful hike, cool temps in the canyon, but a long and bumpy ride to get there!
