Gravelly Point is an area within the National Park Service's George Washington Memorial Parkway in Arlington County, Virginia, in the United States. It is located on the west side of the Potomac River, north of Roaches Run and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The paved Mount Vernon Trail travels through the area.Work out when and for how long to visit Gravelly Point Park and other Arlington attractions using our handy Arlington day trip website.
Aircraft spotters and others use the area to see planes landing at the nearby airport. The area also has a boat launch. In 1746, a house, on a plantation later named Abingdon, existed near Gravelly Point on property that Gerrard Alexander owned. The name of Alexandria, Virginia, commemorates Alexander's family. In 1778, John Parke Custis, the son of Martha Washington and stepson of George Washington, purchased the plantation. Martha Washington’s granddaughter Eleanor Parke Custis was later born on the plantation. A house at Abingdon was destroyed by fire in 1930 and its ruins stabilized.

My favorite part of the experience was watching planes take off and land, picnicking, and watching trains pass over the long bridge across the Potomac river.

A very lovely place if you like watching flights take off and landing. There are benches where you can sit and enjoy the amazing view. You could also talk a nice walk or bike on the path. One of my favourite spot to hangout in the town.

The best place to watch airplanes and have a picnic! Lots of parking and sometimes a few food trucks and a great biking path. There are only port-a-pottys so be prepared but pack a lunch and watch the airplanes!
