Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument is a U.S. National Monument that includes the area around Mount St. Helens in Washington. It was established on August 27, 1982, by U.S. President Ronald Reagan, following the 1980 eruption. The 110,000 acre (445 km2) National Volcanic Monument was set aside for research, recreation, and education. Inside the monument, the environment is left to respond naturally to the disturbance. It was the third national monument to be managed by the U.S. Forest Service.Plan to visit Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument and other customer-reviewed, writer-recommended Amboy attractions using our Amboy trip planner.
At dedication ceremonies on May 18, 1983, Max Peterson, head of the USFS, said, "we can take pride in having preserved the unique episode of natural history for future generations." Since then, many trails, viewpoints, information stations, campgrounds, and picnic areas have been established to accommodate the increasing number of visitors each year.
Beginning in 1983, visitors have been able to drive to Windy Ridge, only 4 miles (6.4 km) northeast of the crater.
Mountain climbing to the summit of the volcano has been allowed since 1986.

You must make the trip to the Johnston Observatory. We were so lucky that we had a clear day and could see the top. We stopped at the Visitor's Center on the way up as well. This had a great hike...

We enjoyed our morning in this area. First, we stopped at the Visitor's center, then we made the scenic drive to the viewing deck. Check to see if the viewing station is open and what the weather conditions are since fog will completely obscure the view. You can take a short walk from the parking lot to a lower viewing area, or you can walk up a paved, winding path to a higher area. Castle Rock is a cute little town where you can shop and eat. Nice area and worth checking out if you're passing through.

Word of caution for this park is timing. We did a road tour here and sadly we had fog which covered the mountain for the entire visit. Still the drive up there was fun, and the visitor center had a lot of information on the volcano. The visitor center also does a great job on building up the volcano in the video presentation which would have been grander if not for the fog. Still worth a trip and if in a road tour there is plenty of parking for the group.
