Located just across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., the county of Arlington blends big city and sprawling suburban environments.
Start off your visit on the 5th (Wed): identify plant and animal life at Hidden Oaks Nature Center, then stroll the grounds of Arlington National Cemetery, and then get to know the fascinating history of The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Washington DC to Arlington is an approximately half hour car ride. You can also drive; or take a subway. In August, daytime highs in Arlington are 87°F, while nighttime lows are 71°F. You'll have a few hours on the 6th (Thu) to wrap things up before traveling to Alexandria.

Just a few metro stops away from the bustle of Washington D.C., Alexandria provides a respite from the fast-paced capital.
Get a sense of the local culture at Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center and George Washington's Mount Vernon. Do your shopping at Torpedo Factory Art Center and The Spice & Tea Exchange® of Alexandria. Explore Alexandria's surroundings by going to Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary (in Lothian), Annapolis (Wild Bird Center, Family Fishing Adventures, &more) and National Museum of the Marine Corps (in Triangle). There's lots more to do: take a stroll through Old Town, learn about winemaking at The Winery at La Grange, and take an in-depth tour of Alexandria Black History Museum.
