One of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, Madurai sits on the banks of the River Vaigai and serves as a center of Tamil culture.
You'll visit kid-friendly attractions like Palani Murugan Temple and Chella Tours. Get a sense of the local culture at Koodal Azhagar Temple and Sri Kottai Mariamman Kovil. Venture out of the city with trips to Dindigul (Dindigul Fort & Anjaneyar Temple), Kalaiyar Kovil Temple (in Sivaganga) and Kannathal Temple (in Nattarasankottai). Chennai to Madurai is an approximately 2.5-hour flight. You can also drive; or take a train. Traveling from Chennai in May, you will find days in Madurai are slightly colder (39°C), and nights are about the same (30°C). Wrap up your sightseeing on the 28th (Fri) early enough to drive to Coimbatore.

Known throughout the country as a major industrial city, Coimbatore possesses a welcoming atmosphere and a growing cosmopolitanism.
Bring the kids along to Government Botanical Garden and Pykara Lake. Gedee Car Museum and Lord Ganesha Temple are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Venture out of the city with trips to Virgin Valley Pathrakadvu (in Mannarkkad), Palakkad (Jain Temple Palghat, Sree Guruvayurappan Temple, &more) and Ooty (Udhagamandalam) (Pykara Falls, Emerald Lake, &more).
