Big Apple

Writer Pearl Buck once called New York City “a place apart,” and this giant urban center remains unlike any other in the world.
Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum and The Met Cloisters are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Discover out-of-the-way places like Greenwich Village and The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). You'll find plenty of places to visit near New York City: Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park (in Poughkeepsie) and Benmarl Vineyards and Winery (in Marlboro). There's lots more to do: explore the world behind art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, wander the streets of Dumbo, go for a charming ride with a horse-drawn carriage tour, and examine the collection at New York Public Library.

Washington to New York City is an approximately 4.5-hour flight. You can also drive. Traveling from Washington in May, you will find days in New York City are a bit cooler (69°F), and nights are about the same (55°F). Finish up your sightseeing early on the 10th (Mon) so you can catch the flight to Buffalo.

The most populous city in the state after New York, Buffalo serves as the gateway to Niagara Falls and Canada for many travelers.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Niagara Falls and Niagara Falls Observation Tower. Get a sense of the local culture at Frank Lloyd Wright's Martin House and National Comedy Center. Explore the numerous day-trip ideas around Buffalo: Jamestown (Lake View Cemetery & Fenton History Center), Niagara Power Project Visitors Center (in Lewiston) and Whirlpool State Park (in Niagara Falls). You can drive from Buffalo to Rochester in 1.5 hours. Other options are to do a combination of taxi and train; or take a bus. In May, daily temperatures in Rochester can reach 70°F, while at night they dip to 49°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 18th (Tue) so you can drive back home.
