The former capital of the Kingdom of Ladakh, Leh possesses a historic old town area marked by stupas, monasteries, and traditional mud-brick houses.
Attractions like Khardung La and Nubra Valley make great kid-friendly stops. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Shanti Stupa and Alchi Monastery. Step out of Leh with an excursion to Hemis Monastery in Hemis--about 1h 5 min away. There's much more to do: let the river carry you with a rafting and tubing tour, take in the dramatic natural features at Moore Plains, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Thiksey Monastery, and admire the verdant scenery at Suru Valley.

On India's western coastline, the former Portuguese colony of Goa tells a visibly different story than the rest of India.
