San Simeon — 2 nights

When you arrive in tiny San Simeon, which lies halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, you can see why William Randolph Hearst chose this coastal locale for his famous hilltop castle.
Start off your visit on the 29th (Thu): explore the historical opulence of Hearst Castle, learn about winemaking at Hearst Ranch Winery, then take a memorable drive along Moonstone Beach Dr, and finally kick back and relax at Moonstone Beach. Here are some ideas for day two: kick back and relax at Piedras Blancas, stop by Friends of the Elephant Seal Visitor Center, then contemplate the long history of Nitt Witt Ridge, and finally trek along Fiscalini Ranch Preserve.

A sparsely populated area with stunning views, Big Sur attracts artists and tourists traveling California’s scenic Highway 1.
On the 1st (Sat), enjoy the sand and surf at Pfeiffer State Beach, take in the exciting artwork at Coast Gallery Big Sur, then take in the dramatic scenery at McWay Falls, and finally enjoy the sea views from Point Sur State Historic Park. On your second day here, enjoy the sand and surf at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, then do a tasting at Joullian Vineyards & Winery, and then take in the views from Bixby Bridge.

You can drive from San Simeon to Big Sur in 2 hours. While traveling from San Simeon, expect slightly colder days and about the same nights in Big Sur, ranging from highs of 65°F to lows of 51°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 3rd (Mon) to allow time to drive to Monterey.
