Gateway to Provence

The 2013 European "Capital of Culture," Marseille is the largest port city on the breezy Mediterranean coast and the second largest city in France.
Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde and Palais des Papes are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Change things up with these side-trips from Marseille: Amphitheatre (les Arenes) (in Arles), Miroir aux Oiseaux (in Martigues) and Chateau de la Gardine (in Chateauneuf-du-Pape). There's still lots to do: take a stroll through The Panier, snap pictures at Pont d'Avignon, don't miss a visit to Chateau d'If, and contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Abbaye Saint Victor.
