When you arrive in tiny San Simeon, which lies halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, you can see why William Randolph Hearst chose this coastal locale for his famous hilltop castle.
Kick off your visit on the 27th (Sat): look for gifts at Friends of the Elephant Seal Visitor Center, look for all kinds of wild species at Piedras Blancas, then step into the grandiose world of Hearst Castle, and finally take some stellar pictures from Ragged Point Overlook. Here are some ideas for day two: make a trip to Nitt Witt Ridge, then kick back and relax at Moonstone Beach, then explore and take pictures at Moonstone Beach Dr, and finally hike along Fiscalini Ranch Preserve.

Start off your visit on the 29th (Mon): tour the pleasant surroundings at Partington Cove, admire the sheer force of McWay Falls, then enjoy the sand and surf at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, then take in nature's colorful creations at Hawthorne Gallery, and finally immerse yourself in nature at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park.
