Mahabalipuram

— 9 nights
Once an important sea port city in the ancient Pallava kingdom, Mahabalipuram today draws in visitors with UNESCO-listed monuments and temples carved out of rock during the 7th and 8th centuries CE. The structures showcase the decoration and form of early Dravidian architecture, and their distinctive designs, striking coloration, and scale still create an evocative atmosphere when studied closely and when seen as a whole.
Visiting Mahishasuramardini Cave and Salty Bone Divers will get you outdoors. Step off the beaten path and head to Trimurti Cave and Kailasanathar Temple. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Mahabalipuram: Kanchipuram (Varatha raja perumal temple, Sri Varadharaja Perumal Temple, &more), Covelong Beach (in Covelong) and DakshinaChitra Museum (in Muttukadu). There's lots more to do: Head underground at Pancha Pandava Cave, explore the ancient world of Monuments at Mahabalipuram, find something for the whole family at MGM Dizzee World, and admire the landmark architecture of Pancha Rathas.

To find more things to do, where to stay, ratings, and other tourist information, go to the Mahabalipuram sightseeing site.

Chennai to Mahabalipuram is an approximately 1.5-hour car ride. You can also do a combination of bus and taxi; or do a combination of train and taxi. In May in Mahabalipuram, expect temperatures between 99°F during the day and 81°F at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 15th (Sat) early enough to travel back home.
