Just a few metro stops away from the bustle of Washington D.C., Alexandria provides a respite from the fast-paced capital.
Take a break from the city and head to Virginia Capital Trail and Chesapeake Beach Railway Trail. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Carlyle House and Fort Washington Park. Change things up with these side-trips from Alexandria: Running Hare Vineyard (in Prince Frederick), Flag Ponds Nature Park (in Lusby) and Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum (in Saint Leonard). There's lots more to do: see the interesting displays at Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum, immerse yourself in nature at Tuckahoe State Park, contemplate the long history of St. John's Episcopal Church, and get outside with Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center.

Located just across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., the county of Arlington blends big city and sprawling suburban environments.
Explore hidden gems such as Stony Man Mountain Overlook and Billy Goat Trail. Step out of the city life by going to Mount Vernon Trail and Old Rag Mountain Hike. Get out of town with these interesting Arlington side-trips: Cooter's in the Country (in Sperryville), Rose River Falls (in Shenandoah National Park) and White Oak Canyon Trail (in Syria).
