Tivoli — 5 nights

Tivoli is a town and comune in Lazio, central Italy, about 30km east-north-east of Rome, at the falls of the Aniene river where it issues from the Sabine hills. Step off the beaten path and head to Villa d'Este and Cascata delle Marmore. Get a sense of the local culture at Santo Stefano di Sessanio and Museo e Cripta della Cattedrale di Anagni. Change things up with these side-trips from Tivoli: Lago di Piediluco (in Piediluco), Basilica di Santa Maria di Collemaggio e Porta Santa (in L'Aquila) and Chiostro del Convento di San Francesco (in Tagliacozzo). There's more to do: Head underground at Caves of Pastena.
