Monte Carlo of Switzerland

Located in the popular holiday region of Ticino, Lugano is the largest Italian-speaking town in Switzerland.
Do some cultural sightseeing at Monte San Giorgio and Chiesa di Santa Maria Immacolata. Bring the kids along to Lake Lugano and Monte San Salvatore. Next up on the itinerary: walk around Parco Ciani, pause for some serene contemplation at Chiesa San Rocco, explore the world behind art at LAC Lugano Arte e Cultura, and get to know the fascinating history of Centro storico Gandria.

Dublin, Ireland to Lugano is an approximately 7-hour combination of flight and train. You can also do a combination of flight, bus, and train; or drive. The time zone difference moving from Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) to Central European Standard Time (CET) is 1 hour. Prepare for somewhat warmer weather when traveling from Dublin in May: high temperatures in Lugano hover around 24°C and lows are around 13°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 1st (Wed) so you can go by car to Basel.

Basel — 6 nights

Situated where the Swiss, German, and French borders meet, Basel is considered the hub of Dreilandereck, this "three countries corner." Its location makes Basel a center of culture and history, brimming with important theaters and museums.
Do some cultural sightseeing at Old Town and Bahnhofstrasse. Bring the kids along to Lake Lucerne and Verkehrshaus der Schweiz. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Basel: Lucerne (Chapel Bridge & Lion Monument), Mt Pilatus (in Kriens) and Zurich (Lake Zurich & Friedhof Fluntern). There's still lots to do: steep yourself in history at Basel Minster, take an in-depth tour of Basel Paper Mill - Swiss Museum for Paper, Writing and Printing, get to know the resident critters at Zoo Basel, and visit Basel's Old Town.

Drive from Lugano to Basel in 3 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or take a bus. Traveling from Lugano in June, expect little chillier with lows of 15°C in Basel. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 7th (Tue) early enough to fly back home.
