Create an itinerary including Molenmuseum de Valk
Visit one of the most symbolic sites in the city at Molenmuseum de Valk, a functioning windmill dating from 1743 and a municipal museum. The museum itself displays items used in the milling process, such as tools and books. Visit the first floor to see the only remaining miller's residence in Holland, where many of the original furnishings remain. Stop to watch the video and learn about the history of grain grinding, then continue upward to the lofts to see more. • We arrived soon after the museum opened on a Saturday and were the only ones there. It’s a self guided tour with a few QR codes to scan for more information. Not all the signs are in English...

  • This small museum is excellent for learning all about how wind mills are working and their history. Every part is visible and you can see how everything is working and constructed.

  • Beautifully restored Dutch windmill. The self guided tour starts on the ground floor, where you can see the fully furnished living quarters of the miller and his family. As you gradually ascend the building you learn all about the history of the mill (the only remaining one of the dozen that surrounded the town) and the life of the owners. All information is provided in both Dutch and English. When you reach the top you can go out onto the platform that encircles the building. From here you have lovely views of the town and you can also see the sails up close as they rotate. There is a small shop and well kept toilets. We spent over an hour here and all the family enjoyed the visit.(There are a lot of stairs and ladders to climb!)
  • Interesting museum telling the history of both this specific mill as well as mills in The Netherlands in general - don't miss the short film on the first floor for lots of context on why windmills are so important to Dutch history. Views from the platform at 14m up are excellent, but the only way down is via very steep ladder steps that you need to descend down backwards
