Visit International Tsunami Museum, dedicated to showing and preserving for subsequent generations the tragic story of the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami that devastated the area. Thousands of lives were lost, businesses ruined, and a great portion of the coastline suffered terrible damage. The museum documents the timeline of events, as well as the post-disaster period, including the ongoing rebuilding process. With information panels and exhibits, the museum tells a desperately sad tale in a simple fashion. • It is a real shame that this museam is such a small and basic affair, seeing the significance of the disaster for the region. Tucked away and without any signage from the main road, you'll find it...

  • We were at a similar memorial on Sri Lanka. Basically, it is the same. I feel for the people who have lost someone, their homes, and the misery they went through. I’m not sure though, if this is the best way to make tourists aware of this disaster. The entire thing didn’t feel exactly right, but somehow, you do have to visit when you’re there. If you come here in the evening, the boat is not lighted. So, you don’t really see it that well. The boat was carried by the waves from the water all the way to its current position on the land. Quite a distance.
  • Was a very nice and upsetting place to visit and just see how devastating natural disasters are
