Grossmunster, Zurich

For unbeatable views over the city's Old Town, head to the top of Grossmunster, a Romanesque church allegedly founded by King Charles I, better known to history as Charlemagne. Huldrych Zwingli, one of the leaders of the 16th-century Reformation, used the cathedral for his preachings against the Catholic Church, setting in motion events that eventually severed Switzerland's links to the papacy. Today, the riverside building serves as one of Zurich's principal Protestant churches, its two imposing towers arguably the city's most recognizable landmarks.
