Revisit the times of the first Alpine pioneers and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere at Intercontinental Church Society. Perched on a ledge overlooking the village of Zermatt, this quaint church dates back to the 19th century, when it was built for the resort's English visitors who used the town as a base camp for conquering the mighty Matterhorn. Today it serves as an important monument to Zermatt's history. Step inside to see several memorial plaques commemorating mountaineers; Reverend Charles Hudson, who lost his life during the first ascent of the Matterhorn, is buried underneath the altar. Services in English are held regularly. The church's cemetery is another historical site worth visiting. • It is easy to miss this historic gem. Only a 5 minute walk up the hill from the main Bahnhofstrasse it is hidden by a big pine tree and buildings. The church is 150 years old and was built as tourism....  more

  • Charming and atmospheric little church, and redolent of the early (and English-dominated) mountaineering era in Zermatt. Also a good view of the village.
  • Beautiful English chapel. Here you can relax. Around the church there are very old tombs. There is also a bench with a view of Zermatt.
