Glacier Express, Zermatt

3.8
Rail Tour · Scenic Railroad
The world's slowest luxury express train, Glacier Express links the glitzy mountain resorts of St. Moritz and Zermatt in the idyllic Swiss Alps. Passing through World Heritage-listed landscapes, the train traverses 291 bridges and 91 tunnels, crossing a mountain pass 2,033 m (6,670 ft) above sea level. The giant windows of the elegantly designed panoramic carriages give you unobstructed views of the majestic Alpine scenery, including lush valleys, deep gorges, and soaring mountaintops. If you can't devote an entire day to admiring mountains landscapes from inside a train carriage, choose a shorter section of the journey and get off at one of the railway's intermediate stations. You must reserve your seats in advance, so plan ahead and book online. Use our Zermatt online driving holiday planner to add Glacier Express and other attractions to your Zermatt vacation plans.

  • Not worth it imo. The route is nothing speical, just 1 landmark (a viaduct) that you can't even take good pictures of as the way the reflections are. I done the whole line from Zermatt to St Moritz...  more »

  • Don’t take glacier express in the summer time. You don’t feel any air con in the coach, and with the windows up to the ceiling, you have no where to hide from the sunshine. Besides, the so-call three-course lunch is terrible, don’t waste the money. All in all , I prefer to call this journey as a “sauna express”.
  • Eurail pass is valid for Glacier Express but if you want to take special panoramic train, you should pay reservation fees. In Glacier Express route, Oberalppass is the highest train station and has a impressive view.
