View the oldest library collection in the country at Stiftsbibliothek. Founded by St. Othmar on the site where St. Gall had established his hermitage, the library holds 2,100 manuscripts dating from the 8th through 15th centuries as well as almost 160,000 published volumes. The library books are available for public use, except for those printed before 1900, which must be read in the reading room. Admire the Rococo-style architecture of the renowned library hall, designed by Peter Thumb. Exhibitions here explain the history of writing and the development of paper and books. Use one of the audio guides in English or take an English-language guided tour, available at specific times. You must wear oversized slippers provided by the library upon entry. • Although the library itself is just a one hall portrayed everywhere, I would rate it 5 stars. The library was a bit disappointing as I was expecting to walk through more rooms/ stairs and corridors like that, to be charmed by the world of books and rare volumes. There is just what you saw on flyers, nothing more. BUT 🪄 The library has two more breathtaking exhibitions, and we were impressed by the effort of those people working to save and protect the rare documents and historical monuments for future generations. It is definitely worth a visit and people of different ages will enjoy the place.
  • It's a must to visit this place. The books are well kept and the ambience is serene. Beautiful place with great artistic artwork. You will be brought back to olden times. Must wear slipper on top of your shoes so that you will protect the floors since its old and creaking everytime someone walk. There's a mummy placed in the library. Swiss Travel Pass is free when you enter the museum but you must get ticket at the counter 1st. There's also museum of books and many more in the cellar. It's a shame we cannot take photograph in there.
