Fossil Museum of Monte San Giorgio was remodelled and expanded by architect Mario Botta, and opened in 2012. The structure exhibits a selection of fossilized animals and plants from the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Monte San Giorgio. Look especially for the reconstructed Ticinosauchus. Other notable items spread over four floors are a variety of animals that lived up to 180 million years ago both in the sea and on the land. Illustrations and models help to explain an extinct world, with fossils found and prepared by noted Italian and Swiss experts since the mid-19th century. • We and the kids had a great couple of hours here. It was really modern, well laid out and includes some rare examples of AR and VR actually being put to good use rather than simply being a gimmick...

  • Nice but pricey little museum. The importance of the UNESCO site is enormous and the exhibitions do a good job of explaining the finds and showing fossils and copies. We learned a lot! If you don't want to spend the steep 44 euros for a family of 5, and as a perfect follow up to the museum, go to the sites themselves. Very pretty and you might find a fossil too!
  • A great place for the children. We all had a lovely time. Virtual reality was a hit, we all loved it and had a great laugh. The lady that greeted us and explain everything was so nice and friendly.
