Catch a train, do some shopping, or take a behind-the-scenes tour at Lucerne Station. Conveniently situated in the center of the city, this lakeside station serves as one of Switzerland's major hubs of domestic and international railway traffic. Originally opened in the 19th century, the station suffered major damage during a 1971 fire. Reconstructed in the 1980s, it now features a sprawling concourse designed by distinguished Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. The heart of the restructured station, the multi-level concourse provides access to an underground shopping mall selling everything from books and newspapers, to fine watches and designer clothes. To see how the station works behind the scenes, take a guided tour of its signal boxes and control centers. The Lucerne station was our point of entry and departure and we loved the beautiful building. It was clean and well maintained and offcourse had great places to grab a bite.

Beautiful, modern station. Signs are uniform which makes navigation a breeze. It has the capacity for a lot of traffic and handles it well. Plenty of amenities (market, restaurants, etc.). Great place to start a trip, end a trip, or simply spend time. (I was an English-speaking tourist visiting the area and had no problems at this station.)

Luzern is a very popular and busy station, but well able to support the traveling public. There is buses out front as well as boats on the lake and obviously trains to take it where you wish to go. Down under the station there is Metropolitan lines and also a great venue for food and shopping.
