Skansen, Stockholm

Must see · Specialty Museum · Museum
Experience centuries of Swedish history through architecture, reconstructed farms, and live reenactments at Skansen, one of the world's first open-air museums. The property, established in 1891, boasts 150 houses and other buildings that have been moved from different parts of the country to this site as examples of regional style. Here Scandinavian traditions are upheld through craft making and Swedish celebrations. Take in views of Stockholm from this vantage point--kids will especially like the Stockholm zoo and children's zoo. After exploring the museum and watching living history actors in period dress, stop into the museum shop to purchase national specialties and handicrafts. • I'm not sure what you'd call Skansen - genuine buildings, but mainly ripped out of their original context, yet it was done so long ago, the whole is arguably more historic than the individual...  more »

  • The exhibits are educational and immersive, with 1-2 actors in each building acting as people would during that time. The buildings are pretty sparse, with short walks in between each, so I would recommend going when the weather is good. The paths are wide and clear, and the atmosphere there is relaxing. It is perfect for tourists wishing to understand more about the local culture, especially for families with children. I did not notice any established restaurants, but they have a small bakery and a large courtyard with many food and drinks stalls. I would recommend this grilled fish stall, which is situated right after the courtyard and next to the lake. It is hot and fresh and perfect for the chilly weather.
  • We visited in January, and unfortunately it's a bit of a ghost town - very few of the exhibits were open, nor the stalls and cafes, so take a picnic with you. However we did take in the animals and were fortunate they were all out and about, including Lynx, wolverine and wolves. The Baltic Sea Centre on site is also very good, with a great display of arctic sea life.
