Ciutadella de Roses represents the ruins of a military fortification used for several centuries. Built by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, the citadel protected the area against pirate and French attacks. The museum within the complex houses amphorae, rusty canons, ancient locks, sickles, anchors, axes, and other artifacts excavated on site. Check out the remains of a Greek settlement, a Roman villa, a few Visigoth buildings, and the earliest known Lombard-style monastery from the 11th century. As over 65s entrance only cost us €2,50 each. €5.00 for under 65. The very helpful lady at the desk spoke vey good English. She also provided English language laminated fact sheets to carry & return..... more

Nice museum and walk around the grounds gives a good overview of the area throughout the ages, stop and watch the short film in the museum also keep a lookout for the snow capped mountains in the distance, lots to see and at only 4 euros it's a worthy visit

Interesting history of Ciutadella. If you don't want to pay for a visit, you can walk around. On the northern part you can also climb on it (legaly).
