Ruins of Empuries, L'Escala

Lying hidden until 1908, Ruins of Empuries on Spain’s Costa Brava represents nearly 2,500 years of Mediterranean history. Visit this ancient port, originally built by the Greeks, in order to see firsthand its archaeological remains and preserved structures. Marvel at the town’s large stone walls, built later by the Romans, as you wander its mosaic-lined streets. The necropolis offers a glimpse of the diversity of Empuries’ inhabitants and rulers through the centuries, and should not be missed. Stop by the city’s museum, which explains its history from pre-Christian times until the Middle Ages, and ponder the daily life of locals from era to era. An on-site parking lot is available, and the ruins can also be reached via a pedestrianized coastal trail from the town of L’Escala.
