The Golubac Fortress (Serbian: Голубачки град or Golubački grad) was a medieval fortified town on the south side of the Danube River, 4 km (2.5 mi) downstream from the modern-day town of Golubac, Serbia. According to recent discoveries, the fortress, which was built during the 14th century by Medieval Serbian state, is split into three compounds which were built in stages. It has ten towers, most of which started square, and several of which received many-sided reinforcements with the advent of firearms. Towers were not connected for easier defense. Also inside the fortress were found Serbian Medieval frescos.
Golubac Fortress has had a tumultuous history. Prior to its construction it was the site of a Roman settlement. During the Middle Ages, it became the object of many battles, especially between the Ottoman Empire and the Kingdom of Hungary. It changed hands repeatedly, passing between Turks, Bulgarians, Hungarians, Serbs, and Austrians, until 1867, when it was turned over to the Serbian Knez, Mihailo Obrenović III. Now, it is a popular tourist attraction in the region and a sightseeing point on Danube boat tours.

The fortress has a distinction of successfully repelling over 120 attacks.

  • Website is really informative and easy to navigate. Contact via email was really good - got a quick email back with all answers. The Fortress itself fantastic, recently renovated, extremely well...

  • One of the most amazing and gorgeous experiences and fortresses that I have had and seen here in Serbia and probably in some other countries. The fortress is so huge and just well maintained. We were able to go to the first level only due to the summer heat. The park within the fortress is also really pretty and there is a gift shop where you can find really beautiful handmade magnets and other souvenirs. The staff was super nice. You will also be able to see beautiful Serbian attire and be mindful not to touch them once at this exhibit. Danube and the other side of the river (Romanian land) makes the scenery just so dreamy and romantic. You can bring your swimsuit if you're up for a swim as Danube looked so clean compared to some other parts of Danube I've seen throughout Serbia.
  • There are several stages to choose from, the lowest 'green' stage is 600 din, which is worth it. Even for this you need to be somewhat physically fit as there are stares to climb. Place is taken care of, and view of the fortress is breathtaking. There is affordable gift shop so get your fridge magnet, then have a coffee near the entrance and enjoy the view. Be sure to read posters and learn about our ancestors.
