The historic Sintra National Palace represents the most well-preserved medieval palace in Portugal. You can tour the palace, which was named a National Monument and World Heritage Site, for a closer look at the preservation and restoration. This castle dates back to the 10th century and was inhabited from at least the 15th through 19th centuries. While it was built in Moorish times, its architectural style is a result of rebuilding in the 1400s. View the mixture of Gothic, Manueline, Mudéjar, and Moorish style present today, as well as decorative ceramic tiles added to the site during the Age of Discoveries. • Of all the castles on the hill, this was my absolute favorite. The halls were wide, scenery was gorgeous and the architecture was to die for. The ticket price was included in the package I bought online. Do not waste your time with tour groups as you can buy a regular ticket package and explore all castles on your own. There is also a shuttle bus that takes you up the hill between different castles. However, if you chose to walk up the hill (equivalent of 32 stories) like I did, you will benefit from buying cool trinkets from street vendors.
  • Palace is really cool from the outside. There were lots and lots of people of course and unfortunately. If you ever think about visiting on a busy day; don't wait in line for 2 hours to see the inside. It's definitely not worth it. Visit the park around it instead (lots of cool places and lookouts). After that return to the palace if you really want to look inside. Usually the queue is gone. I did this today and it saved me 2 hours waiting time.
