Once a major site of medieval Portugal's whaling industry, Baleal Beach today is a popular beach and surfing destination. Technically an island, the area is connected to the mainland via a thin, raised strip of sand. Explore the beaches to lounge in the sun or go for a dip in the calmer waters. You'll find that surfers frequent the shoreline, as varying land and rock formations mean that the area also boasts more advanced waves. You can brush up on your surfing skills or learn new ones at one of the surf schools nearby. Don't miss seeing the ruins of a former fortress from the Napoleonic occupation of the country. Simply beautiful! A really stunning beach, great for surfers and walking. From there a drive around Peniche gives a wonderful flavor of the Portuguese coastline. We were there on a chilly winter...

Beautiful place and a great beach for surfing. Sometimes the waves are to high and scary, but usually it is good for my intermediate-beginner-learner level ;) The beach is smaller than the other Baleal beach (sul), but usually has better conditions for learning to surf. But it is also cool to sit there, there are some rocks that can protect you from the wind. One thing though, there are like two big rocks 🪨 in the water, that you can’t see from the beach. Be carful when you surf there not to hit one of them when falling off board. Other than that, it’s a great spot. Highly recommend, for surfing, lying on the beach or maybe even doing some tough on the sand :)
