Museu Nacional do Azulejo reviews
The history of the tiles is very interesting. It also tells you something about the history of Portugal. The small church in the building is amazing. more »
There is an absolutely delightful museum. The place is beautiful, there are several informations about the tiles and all of that for free. more »
Surprisingly interesting and well laid out museum of ceramic tiles. Informative displays in themed galleries showing how important tiled pictures have been in Portuguese history. From early times when design.ideas and ceramic techniques were brought from China to more recent times. Puts into context the wide variety of and extensive use of tiling on buildings around Lisbon. As a bonus there is a very pleasant cafe as well.
This place feels packed with interesting stuff. Both the building and the exhibits provide plenty to keep you occupied. Technicians are actively restoring tiles, making it clear that the organization isn't standing still. It's a bonus that the museum has a fantastic map which provides an easy-to-follow route through the history.
