Trip Planner: South Pacific / Papua New Guinea / Islands Region / East New Britain / Rabaul / Kokopo War Museum
Delve into history at Kokopo War Museum, a site displaying collections that revolve around the clashes of World War II. Look for authentic relics like numerous Japanese artillery pieces, tanks, and even an A6M2 Zero fighter in great condition. Other items include photographs and the painted nose cone of an American B-17 bomber. English explanations are provided for most objects, but keep in mind the organization of the collections can be confusing, so you may want to seek out a guide. Kokopo War Museum reviews
This museum began in the early 1980's as a small museum at the so called "Yamamoto Bunker" in Rabaul, and was moved to Kokopo to accomidate the growing collection, and in anticpation of a volcanic eruption. The museum's collection was largely assembled and donated by the efforts of Brian Bennett. The original board of directors included: David Lindley, Brian Bennett, Alister Norrie and Dick Joyce. This museum contains a large collection of WWII artifacts from the Rabaul related to the history of the area, including local art & culture, German colonial period, prewar and WWII Japanese occupation.
Great history, right there.
