Shwe-gyu-gyi, Bagan

Absorb the peaceful surroundings of Shwe-gyu-gyi, a 12th-century Indian temple boasting mixtures of Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles. Stone slabs bearing ancient inscriptions suggest that the holy structure took seven months to complete. It consists of three buildings featuring spires reaching for the sky. The main building sits upon a 3 m (12 ft) tall foundation. Step through its famous wooden carved doors to find a brightly lit interior, illuminated with natural light from eleven arched windows and wide-open corridors. Climb to the top floor and out onto the terrace to enjoy magnificent views of pristine scenery. Footwear is not allowed inside.
