Witness original 12th-century history at Gubyaukgyi Temple, containing the region's best-preserved and oldest frescoes depicting the life of Buddha. The dimly lit interior contains shrines connected by hallways, as well as a grand total of 34 recesses. Buddha statues once filled all the recesses, though due to theft only 19 remain. The sacred structure's position just west of the Myazedi Pagoda adds to its significance, as two stone pillars--sometimes referred to as the Burmese Rosetta Stone--were found at the pagoda.
