Visit the oldest pagoda in Bagan, Buphaya Paya. Legend says that the king, having destroyed gourds (an infectuous plant) from the riverbanks, built the pagoda in the shape of that plant to celebrate his achievement. Take a look at the bulbous shape of the gilded dome, and experience the view, since the temple overlooks the river. Today's pagoda represents a reconstruction from 1975; the original was destroyed in an earthquake.
