Create an itinerary including Kakamega Forest National Reserve
Explore the abundant wildlife with a hike through Kakamega Forest National Reserve, Kenya's only tropical rainforest. Believed to be the last remnant of the ancient Guineo-Congolian rainforest that once spanned the continent, the forest today supports over 380 plant species, including Elgon teak, red and white stinkwood, and crotons. Take in the vibrant colors from over 170 species of flowering plants, including 60 kinds of orchids--nine of which are found only here. Climb Buyangu Hill for panoramic views, keeping your eye out for bush pigs, hedgehogs, colobuses, and De Brazza's and blue monkeys. The forest has plenty of hiking and rock climbing opportunities; birders should watch for blue headed bee-eaters, black billed turacos, and grey parrots nesting in the area. A visit to Kakamega Forest National Reserve represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Kakamega trip planner to plot your vacation.
