Create an itinerary including Petra
Originally built over 2,000 years ago by the Arab Nabataeans, Petra serves as a representative example of ancient rock-cut architecture and water collection techniques. Visitors know the fortress and important post on Middle Eastern trade routes for its reddish color. Approach the ancient site by hiking an easy 1 km (0.6 mi) path through steep rock cliffs. Upon arrival, you'll find hundreds of surviving tombs carved in relief out of the rock, as well as a Roman-style amphitheater, a Nabataean monastery, and an intricately detailed treasury. Wear comfortable shoes and a hat to protect your head from the sun, and carry plenty of drinking water. • Truly a wonder of the ancient world, and the principal cultural treasure of the Kingdon of Jordan. It's worth the trip. We spent a day there and only saw the things on the main path. There are many other sites off the main trail. We could have spent two or three days exploring it all. We should have got our admission tickets at the airport when we obtained our visas. Don't forget Little Petra - if you have the time. Water, sunblock, a hat, and good shoes are a must. You can pay to be driven/carried all the way to the Monastery. So many vendors. In some places they ruined the atmosphere of it. But they have a right to be there - It's their home. Just don't buy anything from children.
  • Lots of walking. Don't forget to take water and comfy shoes! The views are awesome! It really feels unreal. For those of us history nerds, you'll have a visual feast. So much to see, to experience and enjoy. I walked around 26km during my one-day visit, so...yeah, lots of walking! You've been warned. Enjoyable visit and higly recommend going. Go early!! That way you avoid all the large tourist groups that arrive at around 7:30am-8:00am (so yeah, arrive before that!). That way you get cool pictures without many people!
