When it opened in 1930, Ohara Museum of Art held the first collection of Western art to be permanently exhibited in Japan. Created in honor of painter Kojima Torajiro, the museum now houses an expansive collection of Western and 20th century Japanese art, with special emphasis on 19th- and 20th-century French painting and sculpture. Start your tour at the classically styled Main Gallery, meander past the pond where water lilies echo the works of Monet, and finish at the Craft and Asiatic Art Gallery to absorb some Eastern culture. Free audio guides are available. Make Ohara Museum of Art a centerpiece of your Kurashiki vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Kurashiki trip planner.

  • Didnt have the chance to go in, but the person at the entrance gave a very good introduction and overview of the place in English.
  • Highly recommended visit if you are in the area, mostly known for having the best collection in Japan for art work from the turn of the 19th century but also includes some modern surprises. Well worth the visit for art enthusiasts
